Bill Would Explore Responsible Growth of Domestic Seafood
Statement from EDF U.S. Aquaculture Campaign Director Maddie Voorhees on the Marine Aquaculture Research for America (MARA) Act
“Addressing the climate crisis requires bold, science-driven solutions—including how we produce food. Seafood is a climate-smart protein with a lower carbon footprint than many land-based alternatives, but we know wild fisheries alone can’t meet rising global demand.
“The MARA Act, introduced by Senators Wicker (R-MS) and Schatz (D-HI), takes a thoughtful and measured approach to exploring U.S. open ocean aquaculture. By investing in research, filling critical knowledge gaps and prioritizing community and environmental safeguards, this bill lays the groundwork for understanding if—and how—this industry can grow responsibly to support ocean health, working waterfronts and American families.”
With more than 3 million members, Environmental Defense Fund creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. To do so, EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships to turn solutions into action. edf.org
